What to Bring -- SAILING!

(Note -- This entire doc is edited for each outing).

The generic, printable list is located here.  Scouts, print it out, strikethrough the items you do not need, and pack the rest.

Here are a couple of packing tips, then a list specific to this campout.  Please have your Scout pack his bag or he will not know what he's bringing or where it is:

Staying Cool (80s/60s expected) and Comfortable:

1)  light sleeping bag -- no winter bags please.
2)  Boat, deck or water shoes that will remain on your feet.  No flip flops -- they will get lost in the surf.  We will sail from the beach and from docks.  You will wade into Lake Michigan and the beach is ROCKY where we sail.
3)  Rain Gear -- Poncho (usually) or rain coat and rain pants --  to keep the rain away (worked for Gettysburg!)
4)  Your SCOUT PANTS (Switchbacks) are the BEST you can have for this outing -- keep the legs at home.  They are quick drying, comfortable, have a buckle and pocket flaps.   Swim trunks are a good backup.
5)  Somehow, experienced Scouts are forgetting their mess kits:  plate, bowl, cup, utensils.
6)  Sun protection -- hat, sunscreen, (and pump bug spray -- no aerosols, please)
7)  Money for:  Dinner on return trip.
8)  Towel.

Staying COMFORTABLE

9)  Avoid over-packing -- bring the right stuff, not a LOT of stuff. -- Please do not bring big pillows.
10)  We always travel in uniform -- a good practice is to wear class B under the uniform shirt for comfort, layering and the ability to take off the uniform during camp setup.  Please do this as we will wear uniforms for several events during this outing.

Having FUN

11)  Please do NOT bring electronics (Portable DVD/mp3 players/games/ etc).  The trip is not long.  Remember, while this may be fun for the individual Scout, it's not any fun at all for his fellow Scouts or when the item gets lost or damaged.  Note:  yes, at times the phones you provide some of your sons have been helpful -- but at this time nearly all leaders have phones and Scout phones are redundant.
12)  Do NOT bring food/snacks/drinks in your gear -- when Scouts do this they do not eat properly, they leave trash around that needs to be picked up later and the practice instigates conflict among the Scouts.  This is an ongoing issue, please be sure your Scout understands.
13)  Don't bring anything that you would care a lot about if it got lost.  Grandpa's first edition classic pocket knife is real cool to have, but active Scouts can lose things -- lost and found at a outing is sometimes quite a treat, but regrettably we lose more then we find.

The Usual Stuff:

Clothing for the outing
1 extra quick drying shorts (in addition to the swim suit and Scout Pants)
1 Class B (Scouty) shirts (in addition to the Class B under uniform)
2 socks (one for Sat and Sun)
2 U-wear (dittos -- and encourage this change)
Gear
Water bottle (always) -- filled for the trip and hung from belt/daypack
Mess Kit (Generally plastic plate/bowl/cup and utensils)
Scout Book (a good habit for all Scouts as older guys will need to refresh their knowledge as they help the younger guys).
    Sleeping pad (wrapped up tightly)
    Toiletries (Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, washcloth)
    Towel (for after showers)

Your Scout shouldn't need to bring anything else.  Try to keep gear at the minimum.
